AiNow is ADiJUST’s programme for advancing a rights-based and African-led vision of artificial intelligence. It places human rights, digital justice, and public accountability at the centre of AI development and governance.
Across Africa, AI is entering health systems, financial services, agriculture, and public administration with promises of greater efficiency, improved prediction, and expanded access. Yet the growing confidence placed in computational systems demands a more fundamental inquiry: what should never be surrendered to an algorithm?
AI can identify patterns, process information, and support human decision-making. It cannot replace moral judgement, democratic deliberation, or collective responsibility. AiNow therefore asks a second question: what kind of artificial intelligence should Africa build, govern, and permit? Our answer is grounded in African agency — AI that understands African realities, reflects its knowledge and languages, and remains accountable to the people it affects.
Whenever technology is presented as a complete answer to a complex human problem, AiNow asks: is there really AI for that? Sometimes the answer is no — and that is where our work begins.
